I'm researching for a sustainability project on finding sustainable alternatives for using balloons during celebrations. As you all know, nylon balloons can be extremely harmful to our environment and often times find themselves in our waterways and oceans after usage. People are reluctant to stop using balloons due to how synonymous with celebrations they've become. So I've come to your community to see if any of you used or have heard of sustainable alternatives to balloons. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kevin. Please check out https://www.preventballoonlitter.org/ and its Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/preventballoonlitter.org/ that offers "picture perfect" and "uplifing" alternatives to balloon releases for use in celebrations and ceremonies. All the ideas offered on the website are litter-free. Another web site focuses on weddings, as our research showed that the #1 "Happy" event during which balloons are released are weddings: https://www.joyfulsendoff.org/
This short video also offers some alternatives: https://youtu.be/horMp9rgSV4
A newer longer version is in production now (Summer 2020) and a Spanish version will be available soon too.
Several partners used CBSM as we did research on WHO releases balloons, WHY they do it, and what alternatives would be acceptable, affordable and available. Partners include Clean Virginia Waterways of Longwood University, the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean (MARCO) and several government and NGOs in New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. Our reserach reports can be downloaded from this page: http://www.longwood.edu/cleanva/publications.html
Please let me know if you have any questions.
