Talking Recycling Bins

We're developing a multi-family recycling campaign to increase participation and reduce contamination. The idea is to install motion sensor devices inside the bins that will make the bins 'talk' to users. I'm wondering if anyone has tried this before in large front-end bins, what type of device they used, and how they were installed.

Check out http://www.thefuntheory.com/ - it's actually a VW project employing all kinds of innovative experiments to enact behavior change. Check out "The World's Deepest Bin" in particular, which sounds the most like what you're looking for.
